The Treasure of Peril Island is a teen adventure novel set on the Thames river in London, England in 1903. The story follows Jack Drayton, a young man with barely enough money to survive. He makes an unlikely connection with a notorious pirate named Black Juan Gaskara who tells him of the treasures hidden on the mysterious Peril Island. As the pirate’s powerful enemies grow hungrier for revenge and the desire to discover the secret of where the treasure is buried, Gaskara leaves Jack a cryptogram, convinced he will use it for a good purpose. Although initially doubtful of this tale, Jack and his best friend Hector begin their adventure guided by the pirate’s illustrative instructions.
C.W. James depicts an authentic and unique pirate adventure experience for the reader through the detailed imagery in Jack’s narration. Jack’s appreciation for Shakespeare is also demonstrated by the poetic lines woven into the story. The vocabulary is true to the plot and transports the reader into the setting using nautical terms and pirate-style dialect; though, at times it disrupts the flow of the book. It may pose a challenge to the reader’s understanding of the story if unfamiliar with the dialogue, especially in the beginning when there is less action. The novel follows Jack’s interactions and encounters with other characters closely. Each character is unique and described in utmost detail, bringing the story to life. Jack and his best friend Hector’s relationship is deep and touching as their loyalty and morals are continuously tested. Their interaction with each other brings humor to the story and a deeper attachment with the characters as their journey unfolds. I would recommend this book to mature young adults who enjoy adventure stories that transport you into a different setting.
Sublime Line: “C.W. James takes the reader on an engaging, adventure-packed tale of a life-changing journey involving an impoverished young boy, a mysterious pirate, and buried treasure.”
