Based on a true story, this young adult novel observes the close and loyal relationship between a master and his dog in the setting of the civil war. Lieutenant Louis Pfeif joins the Fifty Eighth Illinois infantry regiment in 1862 and is insistently followed by his devoted pointer, Barchen. In a unique approach, the story is told through the point of view of Barchen, the dog, as he has his fair share of run-ins and adventures while the unit moves from camp to camp. The story peaks as the civil war intensifies and brings the unit to the anticipated Battle of Shiloh where they are met with the rebels. The portrayal of loyalty and loss are perceived through the relationship of Louis and Barchen through trying times.
As is clear in the detailed depiction of the settings and the Lieutenant’s unit, The Faithful Dog: A Civil War Novel is an extensively researched and well-written novel. In addition, most chapters are labeled with both the place and date to keep readers up to speed. There are parts of the novel that contain very little dialogue, which at times may be slightly less engaging to the reader. However, the fact-filled writing is very creatively written through a unique perspective that lightens up otherwise darker times. This novel would be an enjoyable read for the mature young adult interested in history (or historical reads?), especially those involving the civil war.
Sublime line: “Inspired by a true story, this well-researched and unique civil war novel depicts love and loyalty between an owner and his resourceful dog.”
