Sockeye tells the story of Joe, who returns to a remote Oregon town after spending a decade living in Alaska, where he attempted to escape a painful past by putting distance between himself and his roots, and by trying to drown it in alcohol. Upon his return, he meets Ana, a Nez Perce, and joins her cause to restore a sockeye salmon run to the area.
Although the concept was interesting, the plot of this story was often slow-moving and repetitive. However, the author has a talent for writing descriptions of both settings and characters that added life and color to the novel. The emotional journey of the protagonist was clear and well-written, as were the underlying messages to the reader.
Sublime Line: “Vivid descriptions of characters and the beauty of a remote region of Oregon are the highlights of this work of literary fiction with distinct messages of redemption, forgiveness, and tolerance.”
