In this sweeping historical drama, the true lives of two sisters, born into Scottish nobility, is fictionalized and carries the reader through the early part of the 20th century. Sibell Lilian Mackenzie inherits the wealth, responsibilities, and title of 3rd Countess of Cromartie while she dreams of fulfilling a lifelong goal of becoming a writer and sharing her long-suppressed beliefs in spiritualism and reincarnation. Her younger sister Constance, an accomplished sportswoman, rebels against the restraints of society and attempts to make her mark in an often-controversial manner. Their paths take them through joy and tragedy, love and anger, and suspicion and reconciliation.
This expertly written novel is a beautiful example of how historical facts can be researched and transformed into a work of art. Ms. Bernard’s settings range from the Scottish Highlands to the cities of London, Venice, Constantinople, and New York, to the ancient port city of Tyre. Her characters are diverse and skillfully created, letting the reader relax and enjoy the ebb and flow of the plot, knowing the author had immersed herself into the era and the background to deliver a finely tuned story. To say this novel was difficult to put down would be an understatement. From the first page, I knew this would become one of my favorite historical novels.
Sublime Line: “A full five stars for this wonderfully rich tale about a pair of real-life sisters and their unforgettable adventures and achievements.”
