In Back of the Yard, the protagonist, Betty O’Leary, grows up in a south Chicago neighborhood during the Depression. A tragedy leads to a downward spiral of friction, alcoholism, addiction, and mental illness within her family. Into her adult years, Betty is dogged by the fallout, when she must face her own battle with depression and come to terms with the roots of her emotions.
Ms. Lelvis weaves an intriguing historical family drama in Back of the Yard. Told from first-person point-of-view, the reader develops a kinship with Betty, a well-developed and compelling character. The author also masterfully gives us insight and strong connections with the other characters. The subject matter is admittedly dark, both because of the tragedy and the ensuing emotional pain inflicted on the family, but the story tells a tale of perseverance and finding inner strength. It portrays the power of love, courage, and family ties. The historical research was well-done, expertly immersing the reader in the time periods and settings. This is a novel that invoked a range of emotions and will remain memorable for me.
Sublime Line: “Back of the Yard presents an engrossing, well-written view of the pain of loss and mental illness, while delivering a story of hope, courage, strength, and love.”
