Why choose Sublime Book Review?

Finding the right reviews for the right budget can be hard for an Indie or self-published author. And in many cases, you unknowingly pay for a review that is 100% guaranteed positive. While it’s nice for a reviewer to tell you your book is “the greatest book ever written,” this doesn’t necessarily help you, the author, and it certainly doesn’t help the industry leaders (librarians, booksellers, media professionals) make calculated decisions about purchasing your book or requesting your title for their library.

The Advocate tells the story of Simon, a young multiracial boy suffering from schizophrenia and depression, who grows up in Alabama with a hard-working and demanding mother, a womanizing and gambling father, and an adoring and adored grandmother. Grandma Ollie, a woman greatly influenced by a trauma in her life, makes it her mission to educate and shape Simon into an intellectual. Her constant lectures, along with internal and external experiences, drive Simon to better his life and his mind.

This novel is an intense and original look at the struggles of a young boy in an oppressive environment, both inside and outside of his family, while dealing with a mental illness that is not understood or accepted. The author tries to infuse comedic moments into the narrative, but the material remains dark and heavy. At times, it can also be difficult to read because of the vocabulary and references that may not be easily understood. It is highly recommended to read the preface before diving in, as this will help the reader to grasp the context of the story. For those looking to explore the complexities of the mind and the spirit in a setting of oppression, addictions, and struggles, this unique novel is a must-read.

Sublime Line: “A deep and poignant exploration of mental illness and cultural adversity in the lives of a multiracial family.”
