After the departure of her English fiancé, Lavinia “Viney” Walker is determined to carve out a life for herself in the rural post-Civil War South. She lives in the utopian community of Rugby, in Tennessee’s Cumberland Mountains, where she weaves coverlets made from the wool of her herd of sheep. When her father unexpectedly returns after an absence of nineteen years, in poor health and needing someone to take care of him, he asks Viney to accompany him to Wears Cove, Tennessee. There she becomes a target of a group of vigilantes called the White Caps, who punish unmarried women who behave in a way they consider improper. How Viney fights back against the White Caps makes a moving and inspiring story that keeps the reader engaged.
Sublime Line: “A beautifully written tale with a courageous heroine, based on historical facts.”
