In Decanted, Samantha Goodyear, gives up a promising job as an accountant to follow her dream of being a winemaker. Taking inspiration from her great-aunt, Samantha travels to Beaujolais in France to learn traditional winemaking techniques at a world-class vineyard. She also falls in love with the heir to the estate. A falling-out sends her back to America where she settles in the Napa Valley and uses what she learned to produce her own wine.
This very well-written novel succeeds in doing many things. It tells the story of a courageous, intelligent, adventurous woman who leaves behind all with which she is familiar to turn her dream into a reality. It also delivers an appealing love story. And it introduces us to the intricacies of winemaking, both in France and in California. However, that is not all. It does all of these things in duplicate, because deftly woven into the story is the sub-story of Vivian, Samantha’s great-aunt, who lived her own adventures in the 1930s and passed down her courage and passion for wine to Samantha, two generations later. This novel is well worth the read.
Sublime Line: “For something that goes down smoothly, like a fine wine, Decanted, is a captivating novel with engaging characters and beautifully-described settings.”
