In this paranormal fantasy, Bueckert reimagines the creation myth and explores the forces of good and evil that shape the trajectory of human society. Lilija and Ari, both orphans, each with their own reasons to resent those in power, eventually find each other and discover unexpected allies in their quest to combat the forces that threaten to destroy their world. The characters are vividly portrayed, and readers will be drawn to the animal characters as much as to the human ones. The magic fits naturally into a well-crafted story world, and the eventual revelation of the identity of the Oracle is subtly but effectively presaged.
At times, the narrative is over-written, with too much explanation and occasional instances of pedantry that detract from allowing readers to draw their own conclusions. But readers will undoubtedly be eager for the third and fourth books of this quatrain.
Sublime Line: “A lovely reimagining of the creation myth that reminds us unequivocally of the power of the written word.”
