A Year in Her Life is a novel that covers a period before and after the 2016 election. It deals with the complexities of relationships and social issues as experienced by a young woman, Bonnie, a feminist and activist, who works at a women’s shelter.
The subject matter of this novel was intriguing. Bonnie is grappling with her sexuality, dating a man she likes while falling in love with a married woman. Her emotions run the gamut from euphoric to devastated. At the beginning of the novel, I was concerned that it was going to be only a soapbox for subjects such as the political landscape, homophobia, feminism, and racism. But it settled into the crux of the story, which was Bonnie’s self-discovery, her love affair, her friendships, and the many challenges and feelings she experienced. At times, I wanted to shake her and tell her to get a grip, but she managed to do that on her own, with some help from her friends.
Sublime Line: “A well-written story about a woman’s exploration of love and friendship during a period of political and social turmoil.”
